Yorkshire has been producing gin since the 16th century and now boasts some of the country’s most popular and award winning gins. Countless bars, local supermarkets, even Michelin-starred restaurants in Yorkshire and beyond stock a huge variety.
We've thoroughly enjoyed (in moderation ;) taste testing and getting to know each distillery, in order to handpick and celebrate our favourite flavours in our large luxury gin hamper.
Masons - One of the most recognisable brands. However, have you tried two very different editions – Lavender and Tea? Our favourite is the Lavender Edition, dry lavender notes on the nose and candied lavender on the palette.Yum.
Slingsby - Created by Spirit of Harrogate Founders, Marcus Black and Mike Carthy and Inspired by the story of William Slingsby, who discovered Harrogate’s Tewit Well in 1571. The drink celebrates the town’s heritage as a spa town, visited by many for the supposed medicinal qualities of its water. Over 24 botanicals are combined to make Slingsy Gin, including primrose, rosehip and Taylors of Harrogate Tea. Our favourite is the rhubarb edition.
York Gin - York's only distillery and the very first gin to be distilled in the city of York. The company have won six world-class gins including England Gin Distillery of the Year 2021. Using traditional methods perfected over centuries, the gins regularly win gold medals and boast Yorkshire's best gin, England's best gin and the world's best gin! The company are powered by 100% green energy and buy local wherever possible. Founded by four friends who share a love of gin and a passion for their historic city. York Gin is one of the most popular Yorkshire gins on the Summer Tasting Menu at London Gin Club, Soho. Our favourite is the chocolate and orange flavour which is distilled using cocoa beans from York Cocoa Works to give it a unique and intensely satisfying taste, along with the unmistakable aroma of chocolate. A wonderfully fitting tribute to York’s history of chocolate production.
Whitby Gin - Inspired by artisan gin makers in the Outer Hebrides - The stark contrast between land and sea is the greatest source of inspiration. Heather Flower is collected in collaboration with the North York Moors Authority and the owners work with a seaweed farm based 5 miles offshore from Scarborough to gather forgotten flavours from the sea including sugar kelp and pepper dulse. The Original Edition is distilled with 12 traditional botanicals and signature ingredients for a harmonious flavour combination. Sugar kelp foraged from Robin Hood’s Bay at low tide. Heather from the North York Moors. Yorkshire honey from a local beekeeper. Botanicals are selected both for their delicious flavour and to champion one aspect of Whitby’s varied natural surroundings. Clean and fresh on the palate with a hint of juniper. Nose: A distinctly herbal and floral scent with a hint of sweetness. Our favourite is the Bramble & Bay
Whittaker's - Produced by the family-run, Harrogate Distillery in Nidderdale. The artisian, small-batch gin uses naturally-sourced water from their own land, along with local Hawthorne Berries and Bog Myrtle. Our favourite is The Pink Particular Gin which is aromatic with flavours of cardamon, lemon citrus and pink peppercorns. It should be served neat or with just a dash of tonic.
Harrogate Tipple - Released at RHS Harlow Carr in October 2016. Originally produced in an old Smokehouse in the centre of Harrogate, Premium Harrogate Gin is now distilled at Harrogate Tipple’s new distillery on the Ripley Castle Estate. In addition to their Premium Gin, they also produce Rhubarb, Blueberry and Gooseberry flavours. Our favourite is Rhubarb.
Sloemotion / Hedgegrow - Sloemotion is a small family business run from Green Farm in the village of Barton-le-Willows. Passionate about the countryside and the wildlife which inhabit it, the team at Sloemotion hand-pick the botanicals from local hedgerows. Their first gin was made with the sloe berries from their blackthorn hedges, which are rarely eaten by birds and small mammals due to their bitter taste.Their more recent offering crafted in small batches and brings together the flavours of crab apple, nettle leaf, sloes, elderflowers, and rosehip. Sloemotion recommends serving this with a dash of tonic and a sprig of thyme.
Yorkshire Dales Distillery / Purple Ram - Yorkshire Dales Gin Distillery is a family-run distillery near Richmond. All their spirits are distilled using ancient mineral water from Swaledale and local botanicals. Their Yorkshire gins are quadruple distilled and 100% vapour infused and owners, Sarah and Tony Brotherton have technical excellence in distillation, producing in very small batches. Our favourite is ‘Purple Ram’ which has “A sweet nose of spicy orange, a smooth citrus palate and a balanced juniper finish.”
Hooting Owl - Hooting Owl Distillery is based in the historic Barmby Moor House – A famous coaching house during the 18th and 19th centuries. Their Veterans Gin is distilled using 14 botanicals including Grapefruit Peel, Kafir Lime, Angelica Root and Mountain ash. It is aged for three months before bottling to aid smoothness and has an impressive ABV of 50%.
Raisthorpe Manor - Not only does this company produce the tonic that makes its way into our luxury gin hamper, they also produce their own award-winning gin, a winner of 5 stars at the 2018 Great Taste Awards. Founder Julia Medforth started the business on her kitchen table and her small team still produces artisan gins, vodkas, whisky and ports on the farm at Wharram in the Yorkshire Wolds. Flavours include Oak Aged Dry Gin, Elderflower, Rhubarb, Rose, Violet and Gooseberry Gin Liqueurs and 9ct Shimmering Toffee Caramel or Blood Orange Vodka Liqueurs.
